Oil on Canvas

2008

Nancy Kim is an Asian-American artist born and educated

in the Midwest. She graduated with a BA in International

Relations and Political Theory at Michigan State University

and an MFA in Painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Kim's painting practice has a philosophical bend that

incorporates working with process and material. Her work

is heavily influenced by literature, language, and the

dissolution of boundaries in a time marked by a never-ending

present tense. She contends with issues of otherness, alterity,

trauma, and deferral. The work hovers between representation

and abstraction and seeks to be looked at as objects as well

as looked into as picture images. Kim utilizes different kinds of

media including oils, acrylics, resins, wax, and extruded foam

to construct an experience that shifts the viewer back and

forth between the body and the mind, the here and the elsewhere.
